Samsung boosts smartphone sales target for 2010

Samsung increased its smartphone sales target for the year, and the company hopes to boost both its smartphone market share and handset profit margin into the double digits, a top executive said. J.K. Shin, the president of Samsung's Mobile communications division, told reporters on the sidelines of the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin that Samsung expects to ship 25 million smartphones this year, up from a previous target of 18 million. That earlier target, announced in February, was itself triple the number of smartphones Samsung shipped in 2009. The recalibration reflects in part Samsung's growing confidence in the smartphone...

Machine gun-toting robots deployed on DMZ

Security along the DMZ has gone high-tech, as South Korea has quietly installed a number of machine gun-armed robots to serve as the first line of defense against the potential advance of North Korean soldiers. The stationary robots — which look like a cross between a traffic signal and a tourist-trap telescope — are more drone than Terminator in concept, operated remotely just outside the southern boundary of the DMZ by humans in a nearby command center. Officials refuse to say how many or where the robots have been deployed along the heavily fortified border between the two Koreas, but...

An early pioneer and onetime leader in smart phones, Palm based its revival on the launch of its innovative WebOS operating system, and the Palm Pre launched in June to much...

Speaking at the Samsung Forum in Singapore, the director of Samsung Australia’s IT division, Philip Newton, said the future of mobile computing lay with netbooks and Atom-powered slates which offered processing power and connectivity than the iPad. “A lot of companies have played in the MID (mobile Internet device) market and...

I certainly don’t want to be able to see through the display of my notebook at what is going on behind me. Samsung showed off a notebook with a transparent AMOLED screen a while back and the notebook was popular enough that reports are now coming in that Samsung plans to bring the notebook to market in the next 12 months.
