Challenge to China -- Let's see if you can innovate

What economic crisis? After a blip last winter, China is growing at more than 8% a year, and the scale and speed at which the country is building a modern infrastructure are mind-boggling. But once you've absorbed the metrics -- the size of its trade surplus, the thousands of miles of high-speed railways, the new ports and highways -- a nagging question comes into focus: Sure, China can grow, but can its companies innovate? Can they build products that will compete in the global marketplace? At first sight, it seems a ridiculous question. China's universities are turning out hundreds of...

The New Bugaboo: Low Prices in China

The New Bugaboo: Low Prices Consider yourself in the following situation: You ask someone to run to the store for you to buy you a candy bar, and you give him more cash than necessary. Keep the change, you tell him. The guy gets to the store and decides to shoplift the candy bar instead. Now, are you responsible for the person’s unethical actions? Quality Fade in China

Dealing With China's 'Quality Fade' Paul Midler 07.26.07, 11:11 AM ET Recent media reports detailing a series of quality problems with Chinese-made exports--pet food tainted with prohibited chemicals, toys covered with lead paint and tires that fall apart at high speed--have understandably alarmed the American public and resulted in a number of international product recalls. But supply chain professionals not directly affected by these recalls remain unusually calm. "Everything will be all right," said one U.S. importer on a buying mission to China. "As the country continues to develop, the quality of its products will naturally rise." It's the sort...

Why you haven't "reinvented" your company - 5-5-2005

The word "reinvent" is a dumb term, having an overtone of redundancy. After all, when you have invented something, it exists. You can revise it or change it, but you can't "reinvent" it after you have already invented it. I never heard the term when I first entered the workforce. But somewhere in the 1970s or so, corporate executives-began using the word, and using it a lot. Then as now, the nation had its usual economic ups and downs, but suddenly after one downturn, our nation was heavily laden with companies that had reinvented themselves. What happened is that after...

Close-up of RFID tag. According to published reports, the technology in question – Radio Frequency Identification, or RFID – uses a microchip with an antenna capable of sending out a signal that enables a computer to "see" the product. As WorldNetDaily has reported, RFID technology is being considered for use by companies such as Wal-Mart to track inventory in distribution centers....
