Dell may have struck out with new tablet 'Streak'

Well, Dell made it out of the gate with one of the first Android-powered tablets and the result is a resounding thud. The Dell "Streak" offers a 5-inch screen, weighs about 8 ounces and has a 5-megapixel camera. It measures 6 inches by 3 inches, and therein lies its main issue. What is it? It's not an iPad, which is clearly like a magazine page. When you hold an iPad, it's not a phone. It's a tablet. It is big. It is not something you'd make a phone call on. It's something you take notes on, or read a book...

Dell Set for $100 Million SEC Settlement, CEO May Face Fraud Allegations

Michael Dell is expected to face allegations of committing fraud through negligence... however, is expected to remain as CEO and chairman of the company he founded... The company has been steadily losing market share to competitors as it has seemed to lose its footing. There have also been allegations that it got an artificial boost to its earnings by receiving sizable marketing dollars from Intel to maintain an exclusive relationship with the chipmaker -- providing it stayed away from Intel archrival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). But even for the struggling computer maker, a $100 million settlement would be less than...

Dell faces fresh threat from old PC failures

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- A six-year-old hardware meltdown that plagued millions of computers is coming back to haunt Dell. From 2003 to 2005, Dell sold computers with faulty capacitors that allegedly caused most motherboards on two Dell Optiplex models to break, rendering the computers useless. Dell was aware of the issue, according to recently unsealed court documents from a pending lawsuit, yet continued to sell the computers anyway. Though the juiciest details are still sealed by the court, several internal company e-mails show that Dell instructed its sales staff to downplay the malfunctions to customers. "We need to avoid all...

In Faulty-Computer Suit, Window to Dell Decline

After the math department at the University of Texas noticed some of its Dell computers failing, Dell examined the machines. The company came up with an unusual reason for the computers’ demise: the school had overtaxed the machines by making them perform difficult math calculations. Dell, however, had actually sent the university, in Austin, desktop PCs riddled with faulty electrical components that were leaking chemicals and causing the malfunctions. Dell sold millions of these computers from 2003 to 2005 to major companies like Wal-Mart and Wells Fargo, institutions like the Mayo Clinic and small businesses. “The funny thing was that...

My First Week With The Dell Streak

My First Week With The Dell Streak Yes, after a couple of years with the iPhone, I figured it was about time I checked out "the other side" and visited Android land. I went the whole hog and decided on a Dell Streak. I figured if I was going to contemplate jumping ship, I may as well do so in spectacular fashion! These are really just my initial thoughts after a week or so with the device. Almost suffice to say I haven't felt the need to use my iPhone once in the past week. In fact, a couple...

Ubuntu 'more secure' than Windows, says Dell

Dell reckons Ubuntu offers more protection than Windows online as it convinces consumer PC shoppers they shouldn't be scared of Linux. In a statement flagged here by TheVarGuy.com, Dell picked on security as one of ten reasons why people should buy PCs running Canonical's Linux rather than Microsoft's operating system. According to Dell's site (here, and a PDF here (pdf) in case the page is moved): 6) Ubuntu is safer than Microsoft Windows: The vast majority of viruses and spyware written by hackers are not designed to target and attack Linux. Dell does not provide further details, but continues to...

Where is Michael Dell and why has Dell gone to Hell?

Please excuse this vanity but I have the need to shout from the rooftops in frustration, Dell Computer Company has gone to Hell. Oh my gawd. I have had the worst time with these people. I have owned Dell computers for over 20 years but never again. I have some Alienware on order from them and have since October. OCTOBER people. It has been delayed yet again. This is the fourth delay with no notice and no explaination. The only reason we know it is delayed is by checking the status which always changes right before the ship date. You...

A DellConnect IT specialist has been accused of intercontinental sexual hijinx for remotely flashing a woman client with a nude photo - of herself. According to a report in The Orange County Register out of Santa Ana, California, 45-year-old Stacy Gore received the boobular surprise when she was working with an India-based Dell tech-support drone to disinfect her virus-infected PC. After a reported two and a half hours of remote ministrations to the ailing computer, Gore was surprised to find herself staring at her own breasts - onscreen, that is. "It creeped me out," she told the OCR. The DellConnect...

Dell opened the assembly plant in 2005 and was offered a massive incentives package valued at $305 million if it met hiring and investment goals. The project was seen as a major economic development victory by supporters and a huge waste of taxpayer money by critics. About 600 workers at the plant will be let go next month, Dell announced this afternoon. The rest will be out of work by early next year. The closure of the Forsyth County plant is part of...

Dell V305 Printer Problems

The Dell V305 printer came with my new Dell computer (Vista Home Premium OS). The printer works okay but there are times when it will not print documents from the computer. I get a pop up that says the computer is not communicating with the printer even though everything is plugged in properly and the settings have not been touched. I have heard that this happens with the V305. It has wireless capabilities but I use the USB option instead. If you had to choose another printer that does not fail you, what would it be? Would need a printer/copier/scanner...
